World Cup 2010: Teams – Netherlands
The Netherlands have qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The country will be participating in its 9th FIFA World Cup. The country played in its first FIFA World Cup in 1934. The Netherlands were runners-up in 2 FIFA World Cup tournaments, in 1974 and 1978. The Netherlands national football team is currently ranked at #3 on the FIFA rankings. The team is also referred to as Holland by fans all over the world. The Netherlands have also participated in 8 European Championships over the years and won the competition in 1988. Edwin van der Sar is the most capped played in Dutch football history. He played in 134 matches for the Netherlands between 1995 and 2008. Patrick Kluivert is the highest scoring footballer in Dutch football history. He scored 40 goals in 79 matches between 1994 and 2004. Bert van Marwijk is the current Dutch head coach. He took over from Marco van Basten in 2008. Giovanni van Bronckhorst is current team captain of the Netherlands national football squad. The team is managed by the Royal Netherlands Football Association (Koninklijke Nederlandse Voetbal Bond). This association was founded in 1889. Soccer is very popular in the Netherlands and fans of the Dutch team are easily identifiable by their orange shirts. The Netherlands are definately a team to watch at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
